Happy Valentines Day! While I hope many of you are enjoying this day in vibrant health, there might be some girls like me who are home sick today. Yeah, I know. Perfect timing, right? As I’ve been in recovery mode, I had a brilliant idea! This is perfect timing to share 4 tips for natural self-care while you’re sick!
Being Sick… It’s been a while
When we girls were in the thick of our singing career, getting sick was the worst thing that could possibly happen. You can bet that we did everything from not going to parties to natural immune-boosting teas to honey, cinnamon and lemon mixtures. For four years, we never got sick, thank the Lord.
This bad boy came because this no-sugar-diet girl decided to splurge a couple weekends ago, and you know what happened. Immune system wipe-out! Now several years out of practice, it’s really weird to be sick again! But looking on the bright side, this virus meant I got to see our natural health alternatives do what they do best when I’m at my worst. And yes, they surpassed my expectations!
Ready for my recommendations? Let’s dive in:
Light and Easy on the Meals
I pretty much eat anything when I’m sick, (except for sugar, of course). However, the one thing I do try to eat more of is easy-to-digest foods. The reason for this is because the body is already taxed to the max, so helping your digestion along is very important for conserving energy to get well quicker. This is what I like to eat when I’m sick:
- A Chicken or Veggie-based Soup (sans noodles)
- Apple Sauce
- Oatmeal with raisins
- Wolfberry Tea (counts as food with the reconstituted berries left in)
- Baked Sweet Potato
- Steamed or Roasted Veggies
- Oranges and Tangerines (with each meal for Vitamin C)
Drink Your Way to Health!
Your cells need constant hydration in order to function properly and eliminate junk, so it is very important to keep fully hydrated while you’re not feeling well. I kept a quart sized jar of water by my bed at all times, and I made myself a hot, supportive beverage every few hours.
- Bone Broth (homemade or Lono Life brand is a great source of vitamins, minerals, and liquid-form protein)
- Gooseberry Tea (highest bioavailable Vitamin C from Bulk Herb Store)
- Green Tea with Lemon and Honey
- Ningxia Red
- Zarbees Cough and Throat Nighttime Hot Drink (the only thing that helped me sleep through the night comfortably)
Supplements are Superb!
Supporting your GI tract is so important when you’re not 100%. So besides eating easy foods, I also took some supportive supplements.
- Super C Chewable Tablet (twice a day)
- Inner Defense (between meals)
- Digest and Cleanse Soft Gel + Essentialzyme Caplet (1 hour before biggest meal)
- Life 9 Probiotic Capsule (before bed)
One of the easiest things to do is lapse into depression when your body is under the weather. I listen to my energy levels and read when I feel like it. It has to be a really, really good book or else my mind wanders and I start thinking about all the things I’m missing out on. *chuckle* But being depressed never helped anyone! So when I’m not sleeping or reading, I pray. What could be better than talking with your heavenly Father while you’re sick?
Also, I discovered that I get antsy and want to get work done in bed. However, that’s not always possible. Sometimes my brain just won’t think! The biggest downer is when I know people need me to get something done. If you can relate to this, here’s a tip:
Accept that this is a short period of time when you just won’t be able to check off the boxes.
You need to heal, so let others know you’ll get to it as soon as you are feeling better. Then let it go. Allow your body this opportunity to relax and rest. This simple mindset change can totally shift your body to getting better faster, because you aren’t burdened with toxic stress and depression!
I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this post! Also, if you have any healthy tips you’d like to share in the comments below, just be sure to read our guidelines (below) and write it as compliantly as you can. Last but not least, I pray you won’t have to use this post anytime soon and stay in great health all year long! 😉
Blessings, Jessica B.
