Ah, Fall…I love this season. Not too chilly, just brisk enough for jeans and a cozy sweater. The sunsets are still golden like Summer, with flecks of colored leaves filtering the gentle rays. It’s the perfect time for 3 things: warmly scented candles, sweet drinks from Starbucks, and a festive-smelling lotion to keep your hands happy in the nippy weather… HOLD UP! **record screech!!**
That might be if you didn’t care about what you’re putting in and on your body… but you do! Unbeknownst to most, the 3 Fall Staples mentioned above are absolutely loaded with toxins that your body wasn’t made to process. Let’s take a step back, and instead, give your body something it will love. And don’t worry, there’s still plenty of Autumnal spice & coziness thrown in for good measure 😉
Scented Candles like Smoking a Cigarette?
I don’t know anybody who doesn’t love a good scented candle. In the Fall season, these items of decor become a symbol of comfort & warmth as the chilly weather sets in. I totally get it, but can I be really frank with you? Scented candles are some of the most toxic items you can have in your homes.
While you’re recovering from reading that last statement, let me explain why:
When you burn a candle, you are not only polluting the air you breathe with smoke, which you lungs have to work extra hard to filter… you also are polluting it with synthetic fragrances. Your lungs, like your digestive tract, are actually one of your main detox organs. When you load them up with synthetics and pollutants like smoke & artificial fragrances, your lungs have to work extra hard to detox.
In addition, your body was not made to metabolize synthetics. Artificial fragrances of any kind are a huge hamper on your body systems, and many of them are known carcinogens & endocrine disrupters (read more about this here!). Symptoms of toxic overload from these seemingly harmless pollutants include headaches, inability to focus, fatigue, brain fog, and more.
Here’s a crazy statistic to really bring this fact home: Burning a scented candle can have the same affect on your health as smoking a cigarette. *mic drop*
Autumn Diffuser Blends
So what’s the natural, non-toxic alternative? So glad you asked 🙂
You don’t have to sacrifice your home smelling like an apple pie to keep the toxins out! Try these Young Living essential oil blends in your diffuser (like the dewdrop found the Young Living Premium Starter Kit!) for an extra spicy, festive atmosphere:
Apple Pie Diffuser Blend
Not only will this scent fill the air with Autumnal cheer (Jessica tells me it literally smells like apple pie, Y’all. Go get you some!), it will also calm & uplift your mood with the ancient oil of Cedarwood while keeping your immune system happy with the incredible support of Thieves!
Harvest Garden Diffuser Blend
Jessica and I positively obsess over this blend. It’s equal parts musty & citrus and smells just like a garden in late September. Oregano is the bomb for your immune system, and Tangerine is amazing for de-stressing & relaxing.
Fall-Scented Hand Lotion = Your New Enemy
I’ve never been a fan of conventional hand lotion if I’m being honest. Yeah, it smelled nice and looked nice… but it never moisturized my hands. Ever had the same experience? Ever wondered WHY??
Two words: mineral oil. This toxic, petroleum by-product is one of the main ingredients of conventional lotions and creams.
If the “petroleum by-product” wasn’t enough to get that pumpkin-scented lotion out of your purse and into the nearest waste bin, get this: Mineral Oil coats the skin like plastic wrap and completely clogs the pores. This means the body’s natural defense and detoxification process is blocked completely. Along with this, it actually does NOT hydrate! It dehydrates the skin, killing the outermost layer at the same time.
In addition, most hand creams & lotions contain propylene glycol — or antifreeze (guys, CAR fluid!!! Car.Fluid.WTH!!) – and artificial fragrances and colors made from the waste products of petroleum refining. Woohoo! NOT.
I don’t know about you, but that just makes me want to puke. Please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and ditch that toxic lotion ASAP! Try this instead:
Natural DIY Hand Lotion
My Bomb Balm recipe is amazing for keeping your hands & nails happy in the dry, chilly weather. If you want it to smell a bit more autumnal, try adding Young Living’s Cedarwood, Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg, or Thieves. Go easy on the Thieves, however, as this blend is pretty hot and could cause a burning sensation on the skin if not diluted properly.
If you’re wanting to get your hands on a ready-made lotion or body butter, try Young Living’s luxurious line-up, delectably scented with pure, unadulterated essential oils.
Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) are Loaded with Sugar
Sorry to rain on your trendy Fall parade, but guys, we seriously need to reign in our Starbucks intake. Like, seriously. I don’t care how deliciously, delectably, Autumn-in-a-cup Pumpkin Spice Lattes are (fun fact: I’ve actually never had one #notacoffeedrinker). They’re LOADED with artificial flavors and all sorts of sugar that your body simply doesn’t need.
Ok, ok, I’ll give you one or two per season. But please limit yourself. Although your body might not be crying out for mercy now, it will later. For more info on this, check out Jessica’s article on why we cut out sugar.
Healthy Drinks that Taste like Autumn
A healthy alternative that is just as festive & fun, is Young Living’s recipe for a Witch’s Brew. Now, quick disclaimer, I am no Halloween/witches/zombies fan in the slightest. But I am a fan of a good mug of warm, spicy cider, which is exactly what this recipe is for 🙂 Check it out here!
If you’re looking for a creamy healthy drink, try Briana Thomas’ Velvety Autumn Sip, or Velvety Maple Latte. I’m already drooling just reading those recipe titles #gimme. Add a drop of Thieves or Cinnamon Bark Vitality for extra health-boosting zing!
Ok, well there’s my round-up of healthy alternatives for your top 3 toxic Fall staples!
What healthy alternatives do you use to celebrate the Autumnal season?
