Hey, friends! Today we’re going to talk about why we don’t eat sugar anymore. Though we never ate a lot of it, for a while our family still consumed sugar like the rest of the American culture. Whether in the occasional bowl of ice cream, pie, even small snacks & cereals, it snuck into our daily lives somewhat unnoticed. So, why, if we always ate it in moderation, should we feel the need to cut it out altogether? Today’s post is going to explain all of that and more.
Rethinking Our Sweet Treats
I’ll be upfront with you – we’re not going to “sugarcoat” this in any way (ha, no pun intended 😉 ). Though we all love sugar a lot, there are some pretty weighty reasons as to why you should seriously rethink your consumption of this commodity. And before I say anything else, I should tell you the main reason why Charlotte and I are cutting it out of our diet. Two words – Inflammation and Acne.
What We Mean by Sugar
First of all, when we refer to any kind of sugar or sweet stuff in this post we are actually talking about both the sugar that is considered “healthy,” like 100% Organic Cane Sugar, 100% Organic Corn Syrup, and Brown Sugar; and the really bad stuff like GMO High Fructose Corn Syrup.
All of it is FRUCTOSE, and most of it has no nutritional value. Fructose is found naturally in fruit and foods like Sugar Cane, but once you take away the fiber and extract just the sugar (like in the case of cane sugar & coconut sugar), you’re left with empty calories. On top of that, when any form of fructose is ADDED to foods, be it fruit, pie, or cereals, the end result is not that great for our bodies. Let’s start from inside the mouth.
Sugar and Oral Health
Do you remember my post on our essential oil-infused Tooth Powder? In that post, I talked briefly about the importance of brushing your teeth first thing every morning before breakfast. Why first thing? Because overnight a host of bacteria collects in your mouth waiting to feed on any sugary substances that come from breakfast. As soon as they feed on the sugar they create a substance that breaks down the enamel of your teeth!
The bad news is, this bacteria is present in our mouths all the time, and so if we consume sugar every day, we are basically inviting the cavities in. More trips to the dentist, friends. No thanks! Just about anything sweet (except Stevia) will do this to your teeth.
Sugar is Actually Addicting!
When we take a bite of cake, candy, or a sip of soda, the intake of that sugar causes our brain to release a compound known as dopamine in massive quantities. This is what makes you feel happy after eating something sweet. Sounds nice, right? Actually, this release of dopamine is what will get you addicted to sugar. Try going off of all sugary treats, soda, anything with added sugar for a whole month and you’ll see just how addicted you are!
Psst! Charlotte and I both have done this. I won’t lie, it is hard. The good news is after about three to four weeks, your body literally does not crave sugar. It’s pretty amazing!
Unnecessary Blood Sugar Spike
Besides messing with your brain, sugar causes chaos in your bloodstream. When you eat too much of it on a regular basis, the glucose found naturally in your blood enters into the cells of your body. This turns off the insulin production used to keep your blood sugar level and turns on fat-production in your cells. That is why you gain weight when you eat too much sugar on a regular basis.
Insulin resistance, of course, causes diabetes. You may not have it now, but if you consume too much sugar on a regular basis, chances are you will. I’m not saying that having a little sugar here and there is harmful. If you are healthy your body should be able to process it. However, that still doesn’t mean it’s good for you. It’s empty calories after all.
But, there is an even more important reason why you will want to cut it out completely. Keep reading…
Unfortunately, we live in a day when a lot of people have allergies. Having an allergy is just another way of saying the body is inflamed. The inflammation was triggered by something the body sees as a toxin and thus works in overdrive to get rid of it. The most common food triggers today are of course wheat, nuts, and dairy. But guess what? You don’t have to have an allergy to be experiencing inflammation every day!
The number one biggest cause for bodily inflammation is actually from sugar. When sugar is consumed it poses many threats to our GI tract. It can do all sorts of things like inflaming the lining of the small intestine, to causing a toxic overload on the liver. Your GI Tract is home to the majority of your immune system. That is why when the holidays roll around and people consume more sugar than is good for them, they get sick! *mind blown*
Sugar Causes Acne
You may be surprised to learn that our skin, specifically on our faces, is connected to our GI tract. Google “face mapping” and you will find that there are certain areas of the face that correspond to certain organs in our gut. Charlotte and I have actually experienced this with our own acne issues. When we’ve had digestive problems we will usually see it show up on our foreheads. When we have hormonal issues, we will see it show up on our chins. It’s really quite fascinating!
But the most interesting thing I have seen is when we have had dessert on a consistent basis, our acne doesn’t just flare up in one spot, it flares up everywhere! This is because the sugar is messing with our gut (small and large intestines, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, etc.) which in turn begins to mess with our hormones! It is a vicious cycle, let me tell you!
Eliminating at Your Own Pace
So! After reading all of that you may be thinking, “Well gosh! I should just stop eating it altogether, right now!” I don’t blame you. But let me ease your mind a little and share some encouragement.
Just like with everything else, we have been on this journey of learning about, and not eating, certain kinds of sugar for a long time. It actually wasn’t until this last year when our acne became a problem that Charlotte and I made the commitment to stop eating it. Yes, we have cheated here and there, suffering the consequences of course. Haha! But we’ve definitely gotten over the sugar-craving hump, which is pretty amazing!
You can go slow like we did, or you can cut it out of your diet right away. Either way is fine, but if you’re dealing with health issues, chances are you will feel a million times better if you just stop eating sugar. It will be difficult at first, but not impossible. And hey! We’re in this with you, as are thousands of others. Join us in our boycott against sugar and see what amazing positive changes happen in your life!
If you’re stuck wondering what the alternatives to sugar can be, the short answer is Honey, Maple Syrup, and Stevia. Each has their own host of pro’s and con’s, but the basic of it is that they have far more nutritional value than just empty fructose. We will get into all this in a future post 🙂 But, if you’re wanting to jump on the sugar-free bandwagon ASAP, googling the glycemic index of the three alternatives mentioned will give you a great starting point!
Have you ever tried cutting sugar out of your diet?
How did you do it?
What is your favorite sugar-free dessert?
Blessings in Christ,
By the Way...
