Being joyful is something that can be a breeze for some people, while for others, like me, it is a difficult art to master. I am an artist. I am able to sit down and draw what I see and make it look exactly like the object of interest. But it takes practice, and years of it to be at a point where I can make things look right. The ability to enjoy who we are, in Christ, is such an important part of being joyful. But just like art, it takes years of practice. The important question to ask ourselves right now is: where do we start?
Comparing Robs Our Joy
It all starts in the heart. We can make good heart habits or we can make bad ones. Let me share what I mean…
When we look at the pretty girl at school, co-op, Church, dance practice, even your own sister, and sigh wishing we were her, we are saying to ourselves that we are not enough. We are less than, and in God’s eyes, we are saying we don’t like how He made us. We are robbing ourselves of joy, my friends! And it is certainly no one else’s fault but our own if we feel hurt, annoyed, embittered, or worthless standing beside that other girl.
But when we enjoy the beauty, talent, smarts, whatever it may be about that pretty girl, and allow ourselves to give that to her in our hearts, we are actually empowering ourselves to be filled with joy! Why? Because we are satisfied with how God made us.
Who did God Make You to Be?
No really, ask yourself the question: who did God make you to be? Can you look back over your life and see the beautiful fruit He has allowed your life to produce? There is only one you, and guess what? You are as unique as a snowflake, intricately cut by the masterful hand of the Creator Himself!
When we have given our lives over to Christ and His renewing work, God no longer sees the sinner, but the Savior in us. So, go ahead, love yourself for who God made you in Christ! Love what you are becoming! There is nothing to be ashamed of by loving who God made you in Christ. In fact, by doing so you show a tremendously thankful spirit towards the LORD for giving you the body and abilities for this life’s work!
Loving Our Work
Every snowflake is unique, right? That means that a single one will fall to the earth differently than the trillion-bazillion snowflakes around it. Your journey through life is going to be different from everyone else’s because you are unique! If God made doubles or triples of everything, or worse still, exact replicas of Adam and Eve for all man kind, we would all suffer the same trials they did, and there would be no growth, no History, no Cross, no Church Victorious, no end to the monotonous way of mankind. It would be awful!
God made diversity for the sake of beauty and His ultimate glory. He loves you so much that He designed a specific path just for you and only you to travel. We will constantly be crossing paths with others, but it won’t do us any good to get confused and try to be like those people and follow their path. Glory in the path the Lord has put you on, and try to find the riches He blesses you with every day you walk it!
As a last thought, it is important to remember that if you are following His commandments, and love Him with all of your heart, there is no reason for you to doubt the unique path you are on! Otherwise, there is definitely reason to question your path.
My Own Secret
I don’t think we’ve ever talked about what it is like to live the life of a blogger, but I am going to tell you a little secret: It is no walk in the park. We are challenged by people, even friends sometimes, nearly every step of the way. Our job is “different”, and sometimes doesn’t even seem like work; so it’s hard for others to understand. This makes it difficult sometimes to find satisfaction in our work, and very often I have to muster up the courage to keep going and stop looking at that pretty, talented girl beside me.
Focusing on where God has planted me is no small matter, and enjoying it is quite another. It really is an art to master, and so long as I keep my eyes on Christ, and listen to His guiding Spirit inside my soul, I know my path will be straight and clear.
I say all this to encourage any of you who may be struggling to find your place in this world. Perhaps the way you use your time has been questioned? Perhaps you are confused as to where God placed you in this season? I completely understand because I’ve been there myself more times than I can count! And here’s what I’ve learned: instead of looking to yourself and others for answers, ask Him those questions! Seek His counsel and find your peace in His Word.
Learning to listen to His prodding Spirit has been another lesson I’ve been learning. My heart is easily overcome by fear and doubt, but neither of these emotions are from the Lord. I have to quiet my mind, and focus on Him and what He’s saying before I can find my peace. Again, it takes a lot of practice. But! Practice makes perfect, and Christ is doing all the work. One day we will be like beautiful pieces of artwork in Heaven, and we will rejoice in the One who did it all.
Love always, Jessica B.
