Probably one of the most common things that we humans go through when switching from toxic synthetics to nature’s effective tools, is the detox period. Today I’m going to break it down in simple terms as to WHY it happens, and how we dealt with it.
I laugh a little when we talk about this topic because my Mom always brings it up with a story. When Jess and I were first digging into understanding detoxing, Mom facetiously asked, “So, will we need to stay home from church so that you can have access to a toilet all day…?” LOL! 😀 First off, we need to label a big huge NO over that myth! Now let’s talk about what actually happens when you detox…
What’s the Deal with Detoxing?
When we use artificial chemicals and toxins in and on ourselves, our body does not recognize them. These chemicals resist breaking down in water and thus accumulate in your body. They also accumulate and store in body fat where they can remain for long periods of time.
Our organs are burdened with them as they build up, and we begin to feel the effects: lethargy, inability to focus, sleep trouble, chronic inflammation, unexplained pain, adult acne, hot flashes, stress, fear and more. If you hit your body enough with these nasties, you could even have a case of cancer on your hands. Not pretty.
Let’s say you are ready to take the step and ditch the nasties for good. Woohoo, good for you!!
Get ready for a journey.
As you begin your switch, you will start to notice something new: detoxing. What is detoxing? It is where the toxins stored in your adipose (fat) tissue are released, metabolized, and eliminated. Elimination can occur through the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels and the skin.
In Jessica’s and my case, we had a whole lotta detoxing through our skin. Our other elimination systems weren’t in the best shape (even though we were eating “healthy”), and combine that with our naturally oily skin, and bada-bing-bada-boom: acne.
But, you might be wondering: if we seemed perfectly healthy on the outside pre-detox, how on earth could our other systems be so out of whack? Let me see if I can break this down for you:
We were distressing our bodies with something that it recognizes as a toxin (conventional wheat & sugar), suppressing the symptom of that toxin, acne, with toxic skin care (taxing our liver & hormones), in addition to living through great amounts mental and emotional stress (a break-up, familial issues, etc.) which also taxed our liver, kidneys, and other elimination organs.
It makes perfect sense that as soon as we quit the suppressant (toxic skin care), we would be going through a major detox, especially through our skin!
For Jessica and I, our detox period was discouraging… Our faces broke out like crazy, more than we had ever experienced in our lives. I’m going to get personal here: it’s a very emotionally altering thing to have your physical appearance so impacted by lifestyle changes.
Not a Quick Fix
Here’s the switcheroo, the thing you NEED to get in your head if you are going to walk the non-toxic journey long-term: it is NOT a quick fix. You can’t undo years upon years of chemical exposure & toxic emotions in just a few weeks. To fully detox, it could take you 6 months or longer.
When Jessica and I began this journey, we were in it for the long haul. I am SO thankful that I can sit down and chat with you all about this now because we have (almost) come out of this completely successful. We still have a few more items to tick off our list, and organs to further support… but man, is the finish line ever close!
It’s SO important to remember, through all of this, that detoxing is natural. It’s actually a GOOD thing to experience detoxing because your body is functioning as it should. I remember sitting around a table of fellow Young Living Oilers, feeling self-conscious about my ugly breakouts compared to their radiant skin, and beseeching their advice. As we talked, it was there that I accepted the fact that detoxing is indeed a very beautiful thing.
You are ELIMINATING nasties from your body! And, if you are cutting out all the chemicals, you’re eliminating them FOR GOOD!
It’s sort of like our sanctification journey as Christians. Following Christ is not a “quick fix”, but compared to the burden of sin and death, His load is easy, and His burden is light. I am always in awe of how God paints the picture of salvation in so many areas of our lives, the body’s natural way of detoxing being one of them.
The one Catch
Beware, however, that if you don’t eliminate all the toxins almost completely (because nobody’s perfect) from food & skin care, you will live in a constant state of detox. Not fun. This may result in continual skin conditions (acne, psoriasis, eczema, rashes, etc).
My story with cutting out conventional gluten relates to this fact. When I would “cheat” and eat normal wheat products, I would break out. I couldn’t just do conventional gluten once a week if I wanted to see consistent results. I had to go all in. I was in a constant state of breaking out for months and months before I made the switch. When I put my foot down, and cut out ALL the yucky conventional wheat besides Einkorn, and yes, even the “organic” stuff, my skin (and thus, my body) has finally experienced an (almost) complete detox.
Detoxing is pretty much the make-or-break period of the non-toxic lifestyle switch. It’s super easy to break down, and go back to the “quick fixes”, but the important thing to remember is that you are actually helping your body out by letting it eliminate the toxins, rather than continuing to hoard them.
The Beauty of Detoxing
Well, all that above is pretty bitter-sweet, so let me pour a little more sunshine on this topic.
Want to know my favorite part about this whole detox journey? I have gotten to know myself so well over the past year. I have become intimately connected with the incredible design that is the human body. My understanding of holistic health is greater than ever before. I sense things that I had never sensed. My mentality & cravings have been utterly altered. I feel freer, wiser, healthier.
The liberty that comes with shutting out the toxins is truly incredible. Even someone as young as I can experience dramatic changes in overall health! I don’t have half as many aches & pains, my skin is radiant and clear again, my hair and nails are more healthy than ever (and growing like crazy!), my hormones are my BFF’s (which, for a teenager, is saying A LOT). And all of this just from saying NO to the toxins, sticking it out through the detox period, and replacement buying:
Conventional wheat to Einkorn
Toxic sugar to maple syrup, stevia, and honey
Toxic skin care & hair care to Young Living’s trustworthy products
Messy teen hormones to happiness and balance with YLEO’s and a balanced diet!
Lack of emotional support to Young Living Essential oils!
You are Your Best Health Advocate!
The #1 thing that I want you to take away from this article is that detoxing is a beautiful thing, and only you have the power to commit. I can yack all I want trying to convince you to take this step, but you’re the one with the power. Nobody convinced Jess and me of our need to detox. We just knew that it had to be done. When we empowered ourselves with the tools, knowledge, and yes even courage to break out and break free, we were successful.
You need to have a vision, a purpose. Pray about it, research it, and then do it.
YOU are your best health advocate. YOU can make the choice to get the chemicals OUT and set your body FREE! I know you can do it because we and thousands of other have as well.
Need advice, or support? Well, that’s why Jessica and I are here 🙂 When you join our Young Living team, you are not just buying a kit or product, you are gaining a team of new friends to help you realize your highest potential! Are you ready? Let’s go!
